Anyone interested in cycling would recognise this name. Cino Cinelli founded Cinelli Bikes when he was a professional cyclist. Although he was not an engineer (like Campagnolo, for example), he kept asking for improvements to his bikes. And that’s how the company was born.
As most big bike manufacturers, to produce a wide variety of modern bikes and their components Cinelli works with their production partners globally. But, if you are looking for Italian manufacturing you can consider at least two bicycles – Laser Mia (carbon) and the legendary Supercorsa (steel). Both shown in the pictures on the left.
In the older days, this Italian bike manufacturer carved its global recognition for its exceptional steel bike frames. I know that some of this steel engineering and production is still taking place in Italy – but I am waiting for the company to clarify.
Since Cinelli sold his company to an industrialist Antonio Colombo there was a new focus on ‘communicating Utopian Perfection’ through innovative graphic design.
This started a new era – the ‘New Cycling’ movement, which does not want to conform to the tradition and norms in the cycling world any more. The idea is to merge daring design and sport, be different and full of character.
Consequently, you can see very bright and ‘artistic’ designs on their merchandise and communications. New fixed gear urban bikes are the pinnacle of this unique positioning, and it is attracting a new type of cycling fans.
INTERESTING STORY: There are so many interesting stories for a company with such a rich history, but I decided to talk about ‘today’.
Cinelli’s creative team is being ‘thought challengers’ on their graphic design as part of their New Cycling movement too. To promote Cinelli cycling events in local communities they went with re-creating a Soviet poster. It even reads CCCP – Cinelli Cycling Club Program (see in pictures on the left).
